Customer: Simon, Scottish Borders
Project Type: Gravel Driveway Renovation & Stabilisation
Products Used: The Multigrid 481 from GrassGrids cellular system, geotextile membrane, decorative gravel, stone block setts

Introduction

Simon from the Scottish Borders contacted GrassGrids seeking a long-lasting and eco-friendly solution to upgrade his worn and unstable gravel driveway. The surface had become uneven, overgrown, and difficult to maintain. Simon wanted to keep the traditional look of a rural gravel driveway but improve its strength, drainage, and kerb appeal.

This case study showcases the complete transformation—from the original driveway through to the installation of the Multigrid 481 from GrassGrids and the final attractive finish.

The Challenge

Before renovation, Simon’s driveway suffered from:

  • Poor drainage

  • Ruts and vehicle tracks

  • Gravel displacement

  • Weeds penetrating the surface

  • A tired and messy appearance

With a historic stone house and traditional entrance pillars, Simon needed a system that blended modern performance with timeless visual appeal.

The GrassGrids Solution

GrassGrids recommended a full excavation, proper ground preparation, and installation of their high-strength gravel stabilisation grids.

1. Excavation and Ground Preparation

Simon removed the worn driveway surface and levelled the sub-base to create a solid foundation for the new system.

2. Geotextile Membrane Installation

A geotextile layer was laid across the entire drive.
This key step:

  • Improves stability

  • Stops gravel sinking into the soil

  • Prevents weed growth

  • Enhances drainage performance

3. Installing the Grids

The Multigrid 481 system was then laid and clipped together, creating a strong, permeable structure capable of supporting regular vehicle traffic without rutting.

4. Filling with Decorative Gravel

The grids were filled with fresh gravel, giving a clean, attractive finish while preventing future movement or spreading.

5. Adding Block Setts for Kerb Appeal

At the road entrance, Simon installed traditional stone block setts.
Benefits include:

  • A high-impact visual entrance

  • A clean transition from road to gravel

  • A firm turning zone that prevents gravel loss

The final result is a beautifully framed driveway that complements the historic property.

The Result

The difference between the old and new driveway is dramatic.
Simon now enjoys:

  • A stable, rut-free driveway surface

  • Excellent drainage thanks to permeable GrassGrids

  • Reduced maintenance and weed control

  • A clean, decorative gravel finish that stays in place

  • A high-quality entrance improved with block setts

  • A driveway that perfectly suits the character of the home

This project demonstrates how the Multigrid 481 from GrassGrids can transform the look, longevity, and performance of gravel driveways—especially in rural or historic settings like the Scottish Borders.
